The goal of this research is to study the preclinical development and testing of a self-sensing and self-powered total knee replacement (TKR) that embeds piezoelectric transducers inside the polyethylene bearing of a TKR unit for load sensing of tibiofemoral forces and generation of electrical energy to power the device.
